They say that scent is the strongest sense tied to memory. Last Friday,
I walked into the primary school music classroom where I normally teach
my dance class and was assaulted by the smell of hay, dirt, what may
have been old rope, and a slight touch of manure.
To most
people, this would mean that they had entered a barn or something of
the sort. However, to me, this smell means something entirely
different. It brings back memories of elementary school field days.
Especially kindergarten and first grade.
Playing games outside
all day. Eating sack lunches that you don't really want because you've
already filled up on Little Debbies and cokes. Getting all sweaty and
dirty and just plain not caring, not about anything except playing with
your friends until your parents come to check you out and take you home
early, where you have time to take a bath and get clean before your
best friend (who is a boy, since you haven't yet figured out that boys
have cooties) comes over so that you can fulfill your daily ritual of
watching Power Rangers and then re-enacting whatever happened on that
day's episode on the playset in the backyard until dinnertime- or, if
it was a Friday, dusk.
Sometimes I long for those carefree days. |

| Wow. This past year has really flown by!! I'm gonna miss everyone so
much. Mary Beth, I won't miss you dear. I hope you aren't offended. But
you other peoples....my underclassmen friends, and my peoples going to
other schools like UGA (ESPECIALLY my Katie...not sure what I'm gonna
do about the withdrawals from that one)....I'm really gonna miss you
guys. You all must visit me, and of course I'll visit back. This part
of our journey ends Friday, you guys....if you're looking for me at
graduation, look for the blond most likely bawling on some friend's
shoulder.
